Thank you for opening my eyes up to something I was doing and didn't really understand that I was doing it and for writing this post and for the insight on the middle man.

Yes I've got a lot to learn about how to do what I want to do. Welcome to my reader.

OK, you have it out under a Creative Commons license -- I'm wondering if it's ever going to be at manybooks.net? Cory Doctorow, who has his stuff downloadable for free at his website, also has his stuff available there. (Again, Creative Commons, which is why I thought I might go look there. It's either that sort of thing or Dumas on my PDA; I finished Little Brother and I'm back to Dumas at the moment....

Pace & Kyeli,
What a great summary of the self-pub process! I am currently trying to decide how to handle a book I just finished, so this post should help. Keep up the good work.

Thanks, everyone! (:

Also, since someone asked, here's a rough timetable of how long each step took. Various delays happened due to life. In retrospect, the long gap between the first draft and the second draft was probably good, since it gave us fresh eyes.

1. Rough draft: 10/20/06 - 5/27/07 (with some long gaps)

2. Self-editing: 7/20/08 - 8/27/08 for second draft, 8/29/08 - 8/31/08 for third draft (two 12-hour days and change)

3. Others editing: 9/1/08 - 10/10/08 for the waiting, 10/20/08 - 10/31/08 for the merging

4. Did it during Step 3, it was mostly just filling out forms and waiting

5. Book design & Cover design: 11/1/08 - 11/23/08

6. Printing, fulfillment, & retail: The research took a long time, but once we uploaded the files and proofed the proof, it only took 5 days for the book to appear on Amazon.

7. Marketing: 9/10/08 - present

8. Laurel resting: 1/12/09 - present (:

I wish to go on record as NOT being among the editors who recommended elimination of the word "awesome"! ;-)

Also, I think "make sure you have a seriously kick-ass illustrator" should be its own step.
