Chapter 14: It’s not all about me
The root cause of the usual error is that we assume things about others based on our own internal perceptions, concepts, and experiences. In addition to causing the usual error, this causes another error: the egocentric bias. We know everything there is to know about our own actions and responses, so we mistakenly assume we’re responsible for the actions and responses of others. For instance, when someone we know is upset and we don’t know the cause, we’re more likely to think it’s because of something we did than to think it’s because of something completely unrelated.

Sometimes it helps to have a shorthand way of saying, “It’s not you, REALLY.” Like when you have to cut someone short because you need to reach the toilet *before* the diarrhea really hits. So, one possible shorthand for brushing someone off (but make sure they’re in the know on this!) is, “Diarrhea moment!” as you rush away. Or explaining after the fact if there’s not enough time to even get those two words out, “I’m sorry about that, I was having a diarrhea moment.”
Or if you have something that won’t gross out as many people that works for you, that’s fine, as well.
