But you don't want to give up on self-improvement, right?

In the quest to be awesome, there is a kernel of, "I am not currently awesome."

I think the problem is really in a mismatch of goals and needs. A man thinks, "I need to look like an athlete." is setting a goal that doesn't meet the real need of feeling sexy and desired.

We all seek to fit in and feel a part of those around us - then wrap all these goals around with the underlying need. "If I could just do X, then Y would happen." That won't happen. The only result is that you've done X.

I've kept a journal ever since was a kid. And no matter how old I was I always had "be more feminine" in there.

Why is a nine year old obsessed with being feminine? What does that even mean??

My heart aches when I think about that younger girl, about how broken she felt, about how she never fit in. And yet I am overjoyed when I realized that it was exactly those qualities I most wanted to fit it that are frequently sources of strength for me.

Why can’t we look like ourselves? And BE ourselves??

I love this.
